Dr. Schnabel’s research has advanced understanding of the basis for resistance to demethylation inhibitor (DMI) fungicides in both the apple scab (Venturia inaequalis) and brown rot (Monilinia fructicola) disease systems. He and collaborators are the first to detect M. fructicola resistance to DMI fungicides in peaches. This finding has changed management practices for brown rot in Georgia and South Carolina, alerting the entire U.S. peach industry to watch for similar trends. Dr. Schnabel has also conducted research on the fungus Armillaria mellea, the cause of Armillaria root rot of peach. This disease is quickly gaining importance in SC peach orchards, as the fungus inoculum can survive in decaying root tissue for many years – making rotation an unacceptable cultural management option. He has identified and characterized the Armillaria species in South Carolina and is developing a novel control approach, through genetic manipulation of rootstocks.
